7 Solid Reasons Coal Should Never be King Again in Alberta

Nothing makes these two chicks squawk louder than manipulative, short-sighted men with power selling off stuff that isn’t theirs and telling people that the little bit of money that will find its way to them is worth trading away their air, water, soil and health – and that of the next generation and the one after that (should there be one). Damn, we’re mad.

In the category of incompetent governments falling back on a 19th century industry in the 21st century, we have Alberta Premier Jason Kenney aligning himself with coal companies, inviting them to set up open-pit coal mines in formerly protected areas across the province. And doing it in the most underhanded, weasel-y, patronizing way, preying on communities that are desperate for employment and an economic boost. “Here” he pronounces, like a benevolent benefactor – “I’m giving you these short-term, unsustainable jobs that basically make international corporate elites super-rich while you survive for the next 10 years. How could you possibly ask for more?”

Killing the nascent tourism industry and fly fishing/trout fishing.

Driving CO2 levels higher despite evidence from every scientist and their grandmothers.

Alberta is still landlocked – if we’re not able to get oil to Asia, how about coal?

No imagination for next generation of clean tech.

Bast
No consultation whatsoever before they killed the previous coal policy and closed/handed off provincial parks.

Trading health for money.

What to do?

Raise hell and don’t give up.
