Playing mind games with the cat

How a feisty chick passes the time some days

Bast
Called Buttons’ bluff today. Slapped a harness on him and took him outside.
He immediately saw two dogs. Couldn’t get back inside the apartment fast enough.

Bast
Is resting on the sofa now.

Cooch
Big talker.

Bast
He did scoot out of the apartment when I was taking out the garbage though. Just so he knows I know he could. Playing mind games with my cat.

Bast
Worst thing is, he’s playing mind games with me!

Cooch
So who’s ahead?

Bast
I’m really quite cunning when I need to be.

Cooch
Attagirl. So, thinking about that 9,000-year-old cat DNA recently studied, it begs the question of exactly who chose to live with who.

Cooch
Cats have never quite adapted to being household pets.
Well, most of them haven’t.

Bast
Grammar police: “with whom“.

Cooch
Yeah, I never got that rule.

Bast
When “who” is the object after a preposition, it’s “whom”.

Bast
I love the DNA study of cats – like we didn’t already know at some point in the past they decided life would be better if they cast their lot in with ours.

Cooch
So it was a feline decision, and they like to remind us of that every once in a while.

Bast
I think it probably was. I’d be more thrilled with the study if they found that cats evolved to purr to attract us to them. Or did the article actually include that?

Cooch
It didn’t mention purring. Or snuggling. Or that thing they do with their eyes.

Cooch
I think cats realize they are dang cute enough the way the are and they don’t need to do anything special. Less effort that way. I kinda feel like the purring is an unconscious sign of how much they like humans. Of course, I’m probably just kidding myself there.

Bast
I guess I think cats are more purposeful than that. That it’s really a transactional relationship in their eyes. They will purr and be cute. We will say “Awwwwww!” and feed and protect them.

Cooch
So it benefits them to keep us happy?

Bast
Absolutely.

Cooch
But they also have to put up with being trapped. I feel that pain.

Cooch
Thus, Buttons’ urge to flee once in a while.

Cooch
It just occurred to me how odd this bloxt will look – i.e. a text conversation between cats about cats.

  1. Cats are jerks. But they’re cute. Cute jerks…sure makes it hard to hate them even when you really want to.
