Settled vs. Unsettled: Discuss

Bast
So I’m wondering about creativity and state of mind.

Bast
You always hear about tortured artists, so do you need to feel anxious or depressed to be creative? Like van Gogh??

Cooch
Understanding how we tap into the creative force … so interesting. The word “unsettled” comes to mind for me. Which makes me wonder whether the creative force chooses people who are unsettled, or whether it is when people are unsettled that they are open to creative forces?

Bast
Hmmmm. I’m most productive when I’m settled and content, I think. That doesn’t mean I’m creative during those times.

Bast
Just efficient.

Cooch
For me, settled and content = kinda stifled. Which is unsettling. Which means I’m never settled and content.

Cooch
So my struggle is to be creative, not grumpy.

Bast
Maybe there are two kinds of artists – Stephen King has a very regimented writing style that seems to work for him. I don’t know but I’m guessing Margaret Atwood might be similar.

Bast
They both seem settled and unflappable to me.

Cooch
There are probably lots of kinds of artists (aren’t we all artists of one kind or another?). Maybe they are super-efficient people as well as super-creative.

Cooch
I remember reading about how Abraham Lincoln struggled with “melancholy” but found it was in the midst of his melancholy that he felt most moved to to contemplate what true democracy is and what a truly democratic society would look like and function. He was able to funnel that energy into creativity and inspiration.

Bast
Of course, here’s the other side of me. I procrastinate. Horribly. You know this first-hand. I remember you typing an essay for me as I was still writing it in uni.

Cooch
Um, old chick alert: “typing”.

Cooch
I totally remember that though, and you weren’t the only one I did that for. Guess what – I used that as a way to avoid doing my own assignments. So pro-procrastinator = me.

Cooch
I’d totally buy your premise of different artist types, BTW. So maybe people who find their groove when they’re settled and content are open to the creative force in that state. Those of us who are driven to be antsy and restless are more likely to be hit when we’re all tangled up about something.

Cooch
A psychic once told me that my challenge is to glimpse the creativity in being tangled up. Thus the entanglement doodles (see above). Not sure they quite capture anything particular just yet, but the doodling feels good.

Bast
I love psychics. I wonder if they work better if they’re tangled or settled? I smell a research project!

Cooch
Oooooohhhh yes please.

Cooch
And for us normals, maybe a new creativity type indicator scale? The Bast-Cooch creativity indicator?

Bast
(Don’t you think “alas” is an incredibly underused but super-cool word?)

Cooch
I do. And you’ve used it expertly. What is the word for the feeling of satisfaction you get when exactly the right word is used in exactly the right way?

Cooch
“Lexicontentment”?

Bast
I like it. Let’s use it in a sentence. I feel lexicontent with my word choice.

Cooch
Look at us, being all creative making up words. And check it out – it has the word “content” in it. Even came full circle to the start of our bloxt.
